Alternative Education Options in San Diego, California

Rectangle-6-1

In California, children must be enrolled in a public or private school starting at age 6. NeuroQuest day classes are available for homeschooled students (charter, PSA, or PSP) and those in co-ops, microschools, or private schools. Our classes can supplement your child’s education and offer a refreshing break from traditional learning, providing valuable socialization and community opportunities.

NOTE: If your child is 4 or 5 years old, you are NOT required to register them in any type of schooling until 6 years old in California. They may attend NeuroQuest classes with no school enrollment.

If you need help navigating your homeschool options, please book a consultation call with us today!

You’re not alone and we get that it can be overwhelming.

Charter School

Charter schools are public schools and do not charge tuition. They are funded by state and federal funds based on enrollment. Students can be enrolled in charters year-round as long as they have space.

Charters can be 100% homeschooled base, or 2-4 days on campus. The charter provides all curriculum and resources needed to teach your child. You can supplement your child’s charter education by enrolling in NeuroQuest classes and use charter funds to help pay for these classes. All charters give a specific amount of funds annually for you to apply to elective types of classes.

Here is a list of public charters in alphabetical order. Note that if is stays "independent study", there are no on-site classes at that charter (100% homeschool). But that also means you get up to $400/year in funds to pay for enrichment classes, curriculum and supplies from that charter - CHARTER SCHOOL LIST.

Public School Affidavit (PSA)

Homeschooling parents can establish a private school based in their home by filing a California homeschool affidavit. The Private School Affidavit (PSA) can be filed with the California Department of Education (CDE) on their website from October 1 to October 15. It must be filed every year that you plan to continue homeschooling as a private school entity.

Although this sounds technical, don’t let the language overwhelm you. You will need to create a name for your homeschool and keep specific items on file about it, but once established, private school homeschools in California have an exceptional amount of freedom. There are no reporting requirements regarding your child’s curriculum or grades, no annual testing, and you have complete autonomy to choose the best homeschool curriculum to meet your child’s specific learning needs.

You do NOT get funds when filing a PSA, but have more freedom/flexibility in how you homeschool. Here is a more info about PSAs.

Private School Satellite Program (PSP)

A PSP is a private school which has filed an affidavit. When you sign up, you become a teacher (of your own children) in that school. Your name and address do not appear on the affidavit, but the PSP is required to keep a listing of each teacher and his/her qualifications. The administrator will remind you to turn in the required records and course of study, and there may be other requirements, which will be at the discretion of the director of this private school..

Here is a more info on PSPs.

FAQ

Rectangle-6-1

No, we are not a school. We are a homeschool enrichment center, which means we offer classes to support and enhance your child’s homeschool journey. NeuroQuest hires businesses/people as contractors to teach classes at our 3,000 sq ft. building in Encinitas, San Diego. They determine their own schedules, create the curriculum and bring their own materials. We are the “housing” for that class. We bring classes that you would typically have to drive all over San Diego to join in one, convenient location.

Students can come to classes anytime throughout the day that they are registered Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Parents can register students for one class, a morning of classes or a whole day. All classes are sold separately on our registration page. Full day plans are available – contact info@neuroquest.io.

Some parents choose to supplement NeuroQuest classes for electives that are hard to reproduce at home, like science, engineering, and technology classes. Some choose to supplement core classes at NeuroQuest and do the fun stuff at home! Many families are looking for social community and consistency which NeuroQuest offers in our Lunch Hangtime and Gameschooling classes as well.

Ultimately, you as the guardian, are responsible for properly registering your child for school through a charter or PSA, which means keeping track of your child’s school attendance and documentation; however we do keep student binders with their work which you can use for work samples if you would like.

In California, if you’re child is under 6 years old, you are NOT required to register them for any type of schooling. You may register for NeuroQuest classes without any public, private or homeschool.

A homeschool vendor is a business, organization, or individual that provides educational materials, resources, services, or classes to homeschooling families. These vendors cater to the diverse needs of homeschoolers by offering a wide range of products and services that support home education. At NeuroQuest, we offer:

  • elective classes (science, art, music, cooking, theatre, gardening, sports, esports, STEM, design, and other special interests
  • field trips and community events
  • parent meetups to get support

At Neuroquest, we are actively working on applying to San Diego charter schools to become an approved vendor. This will enable us to receive funding and provide our specialized programs to more families in the region. We understand the importance of financial support in accessing quality educational resources, and we are committed to making our services as accessible as possible.

Parents who are interested in having NeuroQuest as a resource for their children can request us through their charter school. To do this, simply contact your charter school’s administration or resource coordinator and express your interest in our programs. By advocating for our approval, you can help bring our unique, tailored educational experiences to more children, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to thrive.

We appreciate your support and are dedicated to partnering with charter schools to provide inclusive and enriching educational opportunities for every child.

At NeuroQuest.io, we offer a variety of vendor classes designed to cater to the diverse needs of our students. Our classes are available as both core and elective options, providing a comprehensive and flexible educational experience.

Yes, ultimately it is up to the parent to decide if their child is ready for a particular class. It’s common for kids to participate in classes intended for different age groups. Our classes are intentionally mixed-age to promote the greatest success and flexibility. If you’re unsure, please chat or email us for guidance.

NeuroQuest is an inclusive enrichment center. We welcome all students to a space where they feel safe and welcomed, regardless of race, income, neuro-divergency, disability, or gender/sexual identity.

This inclusive approach ensures that every child, regardless of their neurological profile, can benefit from an environment designed to support a wide range of learning styles and needs. Here are some reasons why we take this approach:

  • Inclusivity and Accessibility: We create an inclusive environment  where children who need breaks or other regulation tools can access them whenever they need to.  We value regulation over compliance.

  • Enhanced Learning: Use use a variety of teaching methods and tools that can benefit all learners. For example, using visual aids, hands-on activities, and sensory-friendly materials can help all children better understand and retain information.

  • Social Skills Development: By creating a supportive environment, we encourage positive social interactions and help children develop essential social skills.  Children also gain empathy and understanding through these interactions.

  • Emotional Support: Sometimes children experience heightened anxiety or frustration in traditional learning environments. Our low demand and flexible approach creates a  calmer and more positive experience for everyone.

  • Flexibility and Adaptability: Our programs are designed to be flexible and adaptable, allowing us to respond to the individual needs of each child. This benefits all children by providing the necessary accommodations and supports to succeed.

Yes, children who need a support person with them in class to help keep the child regulated and comfortable are welcome to attend. NeuroQuest requires a fingerprint-cleared background check for any adult attending classes. If they support person is waiting in the lobby or co-working area, no background check is needed. Please contact info@neuroquest.io for details on this process.

Homeschoolers aren’t required to have an Individualized Education Program (IEP), but some recommend that parents of homeschooled children with disabilities create one. IEPs can be useful for homeschooled students, but their usefulness depends on the student’s needs and the services the school provides.

In California, students who attend charter schools, including public charter homeschool programs, are entitled to the same special education services as public school students, including access to their IEP. If a student with an IEP is unable to attend school due to a disability, the school is required to continue providing special education services. Home instruction may also be available for students with disabilities who are hospitalized or have significant health or behavioral needs.

The first session of classes begins August 20 and runs until October 17. We want your child to be happy and thriving in our classes, so we do everything possible to keep them engaged and regulated. This might mean allowing them to take breaks to play with Legos, jump on the trampoline, or go outside. We don’t pressure them, as a low-demand, positive environment encourages willing participation. We offer a one-week trial with no long-term commitment because we’re confident your child will love it and want to return.
